Shree Swami Agnivesh Ji

1939 – 2020

Swami Agnivesh Ji was an Indian social activist, politician, and Arya Samaj scholar. Born Vepa Shyam Rao, he served as a Haryana cabinet minister but left politics for social justice. He founded the Bonded Labour Liberation Front in 1981, fighting tirelessly against forced labour, female foeticide, and untouchability. He also promoted interfaith dialogue and universal brotherhood.

He transitioned from a legal academic to a powerful force for social justice. Born in Andhra Pradesh, he moved to Haryana, joined the Arya Samaj, and embraced asceticism. In 1970, he co-founded the political party Arya Sabha and later served as Haryana’s Education Minister in 1979, resigning soon after to protest state violence against workers.

His greatest achievement came in 1981 when he founded the Bonded Labour Liberation Front (Bandhua Mukti Morcha). His relentless advocacy liberated over 170,000 forced labourers, including children, in brick kilns and stone quarries.

Agnivesh took his fight global, serving as Chairperson of the UN Voluntary Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery. He campaigned against female foeticide, caste discrimination, and alcohol addiction. For his lifelong dedication to human rights and interfaith harmony, he received the prestigious Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) in 2004.
