Social Reform, Civic Rights, Women's Rights & Public Movements

⊛

During 1987–88, a major movement was carried out at the headquarters of the Union Public Service Commission in Delhi to end the compulsory requirement of English in favour of recognition of Indian languages. The initiative for this movement was taken by young colleague Shri Pushpendra Chauhan of Ghaziabad. At his initiative, a youth group from Alwar was the first in the country to undertake a bicycle journey to Delhi in support of the movement. The group included Rajesh Yajnik, Shyam Sharma, Mukesh Bavaliya and others. We actively participated for 4–5 years in sit-ins, hunger strikes, demonstrations, rallies, etc. As a result, the compulsory requirement of English for reaching many important positions has now been removed.

⊛

Inspired by Swami Agnivesh Ji’s programme for the entry of Harijans into temples in Nathdwara, on 2 October 1989, Gandhi Jayanti, we entered openly into several major temples of the city, including Atta Temple, along with 51 Harijan youths.

⊛

In January 1994, a movement was launched against arbitrary fees being charged from students at a B.Ed. college in Alwar district, and the illegally collected fees were returned to all the students. This involved a silent procession, demonstrations, a sit-in, a phased hunger strike and, finally, Shri Yajnik’s five-day hunger strike, after which success was achieved. It was an unprecedented movement in Rajasthan in which the fees were returned.

⊛

In 1995, there was widespread public opposition to the liquor factory being established by the Kedia Group in Sarekhurd village of Alwar district. Various public organisations, social workers and intellectuals participated actively in this movement. Bandhua Mukti Morcha also provided moral and active support to the movement. Swami Agnivesh Ji participated in it. Ultimately, the citizens of Alwar did not allow the said factory to be established there.

⊛

Due to the awareness created by Bandhua Mukti Morcha, in May 1995, the case of an agent of Alwar Urban Cooperative Bank absconding after misappropriating the money of hundreds of small depositors was exposed. The organisation wrote to the then Cooperation Minister Shri Sujan Singh Yadav, got the matter investigated and secured justice for the victims.

⊛

During the hearing on a petition filed by Bandhua Mukti Morcha, 13 state governments, including Rajasthan, submitted in writing to the Supreme Court that there was not a single bonded labourer in their respective states. To investigate this claim, the Court constituted three-member committees in all the states. In the committee, Rajasthan High Court lawyer Shri Ashok Sharma, renowned social worker Shrilata Swaminathan and Morcha State President Shri Rajesh Yajnik were included. In June 1995, they visited several districts of the state, including the district administration, organisations and field areas, and submitted their report to the Supreme Court. Under Bandhua Mukti Morcha’s “Campaign to Settle the Homeless”, the Morcha conducted a survey of Gadia Lohars in Alwar city and submitted the report to the District Collector. The process, which began in November 1997, ended when, in March 1998, 38 Gadia Lohar families received residential plots in the Urban Improvement Trust colony at Surya Nagar and 8 families received residential plots in Buddh Vihar. In March 1998, a grant of ₹5,000 was secured from the Social Welfare Department for each family to construct houses.

For better operation, a report on the school was also broadcast by Alwar Akashvani on 2 May 1998.

Influenced by the organisation’s work in the above settlement, many women and men joined the Morcha. Numerous public-awareness programmes, street meetings, women’s awareness programmes and work on issues such as social evils, child marriage and prohibition were undertaken. As a result of the women’s awareness that followed, on 19 August 1998, women in the settlement severely beat people involved in the illegal liquor trade and destroyed liquor worth thousands of rupees. All of this happened spontaneously.

In April 1998, 35 workers belonging to the Bhil community were removed from the local Prakash Paints factory of the Ramnarayan Group. Devkheda Ka Bas, established years ago by former MLA Late Ramanand Agrawal, had not received attention from any political party or government department for years. Looking at it, it did not appear to be a settlement in the city. The dirty water of the entire city passed near the settlement and reached the fields. During the rainy season, this made the place resemble an island, from which it was very difficult to leave or enter the settlement. Seeing this problem, the Morcha arranged for the then District Collector Shri Deepak Upreti to visit the area. Thereafter, the drain was constructed properly and the road was widened.

⊛

Since its construction, there had been no drainage arrangement at Daudpur Madrasa. A lake-like pool of dirty water always remained in the madrasa, creating a fear of disease among the students. Amid this, the slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” is being raised. Only one Ambani is developing in this country. The meaning of Sadbhavana is an egalitarian society. Seven thousand people in our country are dying of hunger every day. Throughout the world, this number is 21,000. Who is responsible for the deaths of these people? Sadbhavana will be established in the world, country and society only when an egalitarian society is created.

Swami Agnivesh was speaking as the chief speaker at the Sadbhavana Conference organised by Sadbhav Manch in memory of Man. Harinarayan Saini at Saini School. He said that bathing at the Kumbh Mela does not wash away sins. ₹7,000 crore was spent on 15 crore people bathing there. If even one crore among those 15 crore people had come forward with a commitment to save daughters, not take dowry and bridge the gap between the rich and poor, the picture of the country and society would have changed. He said that dividing people into religions in society is wrong. Even great personalities are being divided here. He stressed avoiding social evils, purity of body and soul, and staying away from addictions. He said that incidents such as mob lynching occur precisely because there is no Sadbhavana. This is not good for society.
